Bringing a 1962 Craftsman Table Saw Back to Life
Forty pounds of rust, one wire wheel, and a weekend.
Pulled this Craftsman out of a neighbor's shed. The cast iron top looked like the surface of Mars, the arbor bearings hummed like a washing machine full of bolts, and the fence... well, let's say it had aspirations of being square.
What I did
- Degreased everything with mineral spirits and a plastic scraper
- Wire-wheeled the top (carefully — don't dig into the iron)
- Replaced the arbor bearings
- True'd the fence with a dial indicator and a lot of patience
- Fresh paste wax on the top
Lessons learned
Don't skip the bearing press. A dead-blow hammer and optimism will get you close, but "close" on a table saw is how you invent new swear words.
